About
What is it? Cultural Zest is an online magazine about culture in the broadest sense of the word. It aims to provide you with quality content rather than bombard you with countless mediocre articles. Please enjoy!
What’s in a name? According to Google Dictionary (and as we all know, Google is always right), ‘zest’ is a feeling of pleasure and enthusiasm, or an exciting quality in an activity or situation. Like the zest of a lemon or an orange spices up a dish, Cultural Zest aims to give you some inspiration. A zest for life.
Who makes Cultural Zest? This magazine is made by anyone who contributes to it in any way, but like any magazine, it has writers. If you wish to write for Cultural Zest, whether you want to join the editorial team or just have a great idea for an article, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If it’s good, it’ll be published. Don’t underestimate your writing abilities, and above all, have fun! That said, let’s go on to meet the writing team.
Jan Jacob Mekes was born in 1982 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He loves reading, writing, photography, and enjoying the beautiful things in life. More than enough reasons to start his own online magazine about culture, which you are looking at right now.
Jack Butler is an Australian student currently in his first year of University. Although living on the other side of the world in comparison to Jan Jacob Mekes, they can still collaborate easily through the wonder that is the internet. Jack enjoys reading, writing, video games, and pretty much anything that can be classified “funny”. He is this site’s go-to-guy on everything video games, and although university limits his ability to contribute regularly still has the goal of one day getting a better “about” picture than Jan.
Matthew West is yet another Australian student, although two years younger than Jack. He is a massive movie buff, absolutely loves every Monkey Island game and really enjoys writing stories and illustrating weird and wonderful characters. A big fan of British humor, Matthew enjoys really pretty much anything with Hugh Grant. But most importantly, he will try any type of food. And everybody needs food!
Tom Scott is a British student who loves both culture, zest and citric fruits. He likes many different types of games, films and books but never anything too serious. Tom has many hidden talents such as the ability to balance a spoon on the end of his nose which is sure to come in handy when writing for the magazine.
Matko Pavlic is a Croatian student (yet another on this site) who devoted his life to good movies and music, which he tries to enjoy on a deeper level. He plays drums (and several other instruments) and also enjoys books and video games, mostly adventure games (Monkey Island being the absolute favorite, of course) and RPGs. He is always looking for a good story that reflects the weird human psychology, in everything from movies, books and games to the little things in everyday life. Humor also plays a great part in his life, which comes in handy, seeing that it’s the only way to survive – in general and on the interwebs, where he mostly resides nowadays.
So, you can see that we at Cultural Zest are infact very much a Multi-Cultural Zest. In fact, that is one of our philosophies. We want to assemble the greatest editorial team, from every continent and every country in those continents (except Antarctica, for good reason), as only in this way are we able to bring to you the most interesting, factual and up to date Cultural news from all over the globe.
